BLCU “Experimental Class for International Talents in Sinology and Chinese Studies”2025 Third Intake Selection Application Notice

1.Program Introduction

To cultivate strategic international talents in the fields of Sinology and China Studies, who will play a critical role in academic research, cross-cultural communication, and global governance with global vision, in-depth understanding of China, thorough cross-cultural communication skills, and long-term leadership potential, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), with university-level approval, has established the Experimental Class for International Talents in Sinology and Chinese Studies, offered by the College of Sinology and Chinese Studies (Belt and Road Academy).

The program spans nine years in total, including four years of undergraduate study and five years of direct-entry doctoral study (a 4+5 integrated model). Chinese and international students study side by side in the same classrooms. The annual cohort is limited to 40 students, including 20 Chinese students and 20 international students.

2.Program Highlights

(1) Full Academic Mentorship For Everyone

Each undergraduate student will have a doctoral-level academic mentor upon enrollment. Students will join their mentor’s research team and engage in academic research throughout their undergraduate studies.

(2) World-Renowned Sinologists in the Classroom

The program invites distinguished scholars from BLCU, globally recognized Sinologists, and Wutong Chair Professors to deliver high-level courses tailored for undergraduates.

(3) Comprehensive Funding Support

International students are fully funded with scholarships for both undergraduate and doctoral stages.

Chinese students will receive government-sponsored opportunities to study abroad for at least one semester during undergraduate studies and no less than one year of joint training during graduate studies.

(4) Dual Support for Academic Advancement and Career Development

90% of Chinese students will be qualified for postgraduate recommendation (exemption from entrance exams) and will be prioritized for teaching positions at top-tier universities.

International students will have the opportunity to get at least six months of internship at leading Chinese companies and will be prioritized for positions in international organizations or cultural institutions as China affairs consultants.

3.Eligibility

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

Third-year Chinese undergraduate students enrolled at BLCU (Class of 2023);

Third-year international undergraduate students enrolled at BLCU.

4.Application Process

Applicants must compile the following application materials in the order listed into a single PDF file and submit it via email to [email protected] along with the application form by 15:00 on September 24, 2025.

The file should be named in the format:

“Experimental Class Application + Chinese Student/International Student + Department + Name”.

A. Required Documents

(1) Identification Document

Chinese students: scanned copy of both sides of the national ID card;

International students: scanned copy of passport photo page.

(2) Academic Records

Official transcript for the first and second undergraduate year.

(3) Proof of English Proficiency

HSK score report, TOEFL or IELTS score report, or other verifiable evidence of Chinese/English proficiency.

(4) Academic Portfolio

Handwritten reading notes offering critical commentary on a classic Chinese text, in either Chinese or English.

B. Supplementary Materials

(1) A 3-minute short video titled “Modern Relevance of Traditional Chinese Culture”, in English with Chinese subtitles; MP4 or WAV format, clear video quality.

(2) A letters of recommendation from associate professors or above.

(3) Proof of International Experience: e.g., Model United Nations (MUN) participation, overseas study programs, awards in multilingual competitions.

(4) Proof of Special Talents: e.g., certificates related to intangible cultural heritage, statistics from academic or cultural media platforms (e.g., Zhihu column, Bilibili channel).

If materials are in a language other than Chinese or English, a certified translation in Chinese or English must be provided.
